Good to Know

Planning your trip to Everest Base Camp requires preparation and awareness of local nuances. Here are some helpful insights to ensure a seamless travel experience:

Currency and Payments

The local currency is the Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Carry small denominations for convenience in remote areas.

ATMs are available in Kathmandu but are scarce along the trekking route. Bring enough cash for your trek.

Credit cards are rarely accepted in the Everest region, so plan accordingly.

Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is customary in Nepal, especially for guides, porters, and hotel staff. Prepare to tip generously as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work.

Language

Nepali is the official language, but many people in the trekking areas speak basic English.

Learning a few Nepali phrases, such as “Namaste” (hello), can go a long way in building rapport with locals.

Electricity and Charging

Electricity is available in most teahouses, but charging your devices often incurs a fee.

Bring a universal adapter and consider carrying a power bank for backup.

Water Safety

Avoid drinking untreated water. Use water purification tablets, filters, or buy bottled water.

Refill stations are available in some areas to reduce plastic waste.

Altitude Awareness

Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, and shortness of breath. Inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

Ascend slowly and follow the acclimatization schedule.

Cultural Etiquette

Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals.

Remove your shoes before entering temples or homes.

Avoid touching people’s heads or pointing with your feet, as these actions are considered disrespectful.

Time Zone

Nepal Standard Time (NST) is 5 hours and 45 minutes ahead of GMT. Plan your communication and travel accordingly.
